Backups, They Work

I got my laptop back this afternoon. It’s back and good as ever. Hurray!

I must say, I am impressed with Apple. First, they got me my laptop back to me sooner than I expected (less than 3 days). Then their new Time Machine software worked perfectly and I was restored to within in a day of the disaster in just a couple of hours.

For the benefit of who ever might be reading this, here are a couple of lessons.

  1. Do daily backups. This is a pain unless you have some sort of automated solution. I’ve setup several different systems in the past. For personal backups, by far, Time Machine is the best. When I go home, all I have to do is remember to plug in to my external hard drive and everything is just taken care of.
  2. If you have an Apple Laptop, get Apple Care. My iSight camera has not been working since Christmas, I had hoped it was some sort of software issue and strangely enough, while I was spending a little time trying to trouble shoot it, my hard drive decided die. I took it into the Apple store, they took care of everything for free, under the warranty. Now as some of you may know I have not always had good experiences with Apple Care, however this has taught me that even though it is pricey and even then they will not fix anything for free, this one set of repairers were easily worth the money I paid for the extended warranty.
  3. If you work on your Apple daily get Pro Care. I’m not sure how big of a difference it made in this case, but Pro Care moved me to the front of the repair cue. I’m not sure how much that speed things up but every little bit helps.

Wow, that really sounds like an Apple Commercial. I’ll be the first to tell my dealings with Apple have not always been “peaches and cream”, but this time they really came through for me.
